About us

VIHDA was founded in June 2006 in Guayaquil (pop. 2'500.000), Ecuador’s largest and most affected city by HIV/AIDS, to work primarily in the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV during pregnancy, birth or breastfeeding.

Since January 2007 to date (July 2020) we have performed over 430,000 voluntary HIV tests to pregnant women who get their prenatal care and/or give birth in Guayaquil’s largest Maternity Hospitals, as well as to walk-in community members at our testing center. We have detected 3,058 HIV+ cases which we have enrolled in the Ministry of Health's National HIV/AIDS program.

All HIV+ expecting mothers receive ARV treatment prior to birth, c-section delivery, and ARV treatment for the babies after birth.  Additionally, after birth HIV+ mothers are enrolled in the MOH’s National HIV/AIDS program to receive ARV medications and specialized medical care to supervise their adherence long term.
